I was lucky enough to receive a scholarship which changed my life. I worked hard to achieve it and it was an amazing feeling when I found out that I had been accepted for this opportunity. It wasn’t just about the money; it was about the education, compassion, community service, growth, and career development that came with it. It also gave me a sense of independence and self-love. Receiving a 50% scholarship meant that I could pursue my dreams without worrying about how I would pay for them. It was an incredible experience and one that will stay with me forever.
My love of learning and independent spirit were essential components in getting the scholarship. Through hard work, I demonstrated my academic excellence and showed how I could use it for the betterment of society. My volunteer work in various organizations showcased my commitment to service and compassion for others. Not just that, I also focussed on personal development by participating in various competitions, showing leadership abilities, working on public speaking, communication, and presentation skills.
All these elements combined made me a strong candidate for the scholarship and ultimately led me to achieving it.
How can you begin?
Do your homework, shortlist the course you want to pursue and the university you want to go to. Ensure that you have all your documents labelled and organized.
Universities need to see technical skills but more than that they need to see your communication, presentation, and leadership skills. Participate in a variety of events and get as many official certificates as you can.
Every country has different scholarship options that range between Merit awards, social work awards, Public, and private scholarships. Check your eligibility for every one of them and apply to as many as possible. Check for scholarships provided by your own Government as well.
Social work is lifechanging in so many ways. Not only do you get to focus on being solution focussed, you do it to uplift a community of people who need help. Universities appreciate people who can think beyond themselves especially on a global level.
A lot of students make the mistake of not reading books throughout their childhood. Not only is reading a great habit, it is your first step towards gaining exposure, cultivating your imagination, and generating ideas. Reading opens you up to infinite possibilities and givs you an insight into different worlds through different people’s perspectives.
Your portfolio will be a collection of records that reflect your accomplishments, attributes, experiences, and skills. It will help showcase your best work, values, and achievements which is important for any scholarship committee. The sooner you start building it, the better your chances of receiving a scholarship will become.
This is probably the most difficult part of getting a scholarship. You need to convince a jury of people that you are better than thousands of other students applying for the same awards. What makes you different are your experiences, it could be through traveling, creating something that made an impact in your community, starting a business, having good social media reach, being a sportsperson, representing your university/state/country in competitions, or being an artist. Do things apart from studying!
